The success rate is not necessarily 100% for this tip. Obviously, this is limited strictly by how much gold you are holding, as both the upgrade and amulet costs continue to rise, but it can help get a few upgrades quickly if you have the gold currently. Then, if you die quickly again, you could repeat the same process again. When you die and use the amulet, you can buy an amulet and upgrade.
